Third Party Assurance – Good Environmental Choice Australia GECA
The Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) is an internationally recognised eco-label that serves to coordinate and promote scientifically responsible Eco labelling worldwide in accordance with ISO 14024. It identifies a product as environmentally preferable, provide third-party corroboration of environmental claims, and distinguish a product from competitors that can't support their environmental assertions. The Digester has been awarded the GECA eco-label which provides professional environmental certification as a “Green” product. By looking for and being aware of products and services that have been awarded the GECA label you will be making a better environmental choice.
An "Eco label" such as GECA identifies overall environmental preference of a product or service within a specific product/service category based on life cycle considerations. In contrast to "green" symbols or claim statements developed by manufacturers and service providers, an Eco label is awarded by an impartial third-party in relation to certain products or services that are independently determined to meet environmental leadership criteria. They have listed the factors that identify an environmentally innovative product or service.
- The product/service consists of recycled content, or uses waste-resources;
- The product/service is based on low-energy, low-water and low-emission production among others;
- The product/service is identified as not containing or employing carcinogenic (cancer-causing substances) or other toxic/hazardous materials;
- The product can be recycled, or the manufacturer accepts the product back for recycling at end-of-life;
- The service is dedicated to minimizing the use and wastage of resources, and the reduction of emissions to the environment, throughout its entire operation;
- The manufacturer or service provider promotes the environmental preference of the product or service;.
- The manufacturer or service provider is committed to the continuous environmental improvement of the product and its operations, and advice on the best environmental use of the product or service to consumers.
The evaluations are based on state-of-the-art science and information using internationally recognized methods and procedures. To earn the coveted Eco-label, a product must meet the stringent environmental standard for the category as demonstrated by rigorous evaluation, testing and a plant visit. It says that a product or service has been tested according to science-based procedures, that it works as well or better than others in its class, and that it has been evaluated without bias or conflict of interest.
Purchasing products that have an internationally recognized eco-label sends a clear message: We care about improving the health and welfare of people and the planet. |
